Story could have stood alone without the graphic sex. One other character is too blinded by ambition and duty to understand where his duty really lies, and another is too docile to make the reader feel anything at all, even though she is probably the most deserving of pity. Can't wait for the next one. One way is a most excellent mass market history of the initial Portuguese expeditions to the Indian Ocean and the conquests that followed.
